Screens or Soil? What’s Really Shaping the Next Generation

Why Communication, People Skills, and Preteen Discipleship Matter More Than We Think

“Do you limit screen time for your kids?”

“Hm… interesting. Why do you ask?”

“Well… they look at me when we’re talking. They play and interact with me differently than most other kids I’ve encountered. And they ask questions — they actually want to show me things.”

That was a real and recent conversation I had.

And it got me thinking.

Because it wasn’t really about screen time.

It was about what’s shaping them.

It’s Bigger Than Just Us

That moment reminded me of something important:

Communication and people skills aren’t just something we work on as adults.

They are something we are called to pass on.

We are raising a generation of disciples — young people who are learning not just what to believe, but how to connect, communicate, and reflect the love of Christ to others.

And that kind of preteen discipleship doesn’t happen by accident.

It starts with us.

But it doesn’t stop with us.

The Soil We’re Creating

Every generation is shaped by what surrounds them.

God designed us to grow, to influence, and to reflect Him in the way we live and interact with others.

Which means this is bigger than behavior.

It’s about environment.

It’s about the soil we are planting them in.

When we invest intentionally in the discipleship of preteens — through our presence, our communication, and our influence — we are cultivating something far deeper than good habits.

We are cultivating Kingdom impact.

The Taproot That Holds It All Together

I love gardening, and recently God reminded me of something powerful: the taproot.

The taproot is the central root of a plant — the one that grows deepest and anchors everything else.

But it’s not just about depth.

As it matures, the taproot develops a thicker, stronger outer layer — a kind of woody structure that provides:

  • Stability in storms
  • Protection against stress
  • Strength to support future growth

It doesn’t just feed the plant.

It protects it.

And from that strong center, smaller lateral roots begin to grow — expanding support, connection, and resilience.

Why This Matters for the Preteen Years

The preteen years are “taproot years.”

This is where depth begins to form. Where structure is built. Where stability is either strengthened… or left fragile.

And the adults in their lives — parents, ministry leaders, grandparents, mentors — are helping shape that root system.

We are:

  • Planting them in soil
  • Surrounding them with influence
  • Helping form both depth and durability

Because it’s not enough for roots to go deep.

They also need to grow strong enough to withstand what’s coming.

This is exactly the foundation of faith we’re called to help build — not just in our kids, but in ourselves first. Read more about investing in the next generation on the Preteen Journey blog.

What Preteens Actually Need

Just like a plant needs water, sunlight, and care…

A preteen needs:

  • Safety (emotional and relational)
  • Trust (built through consistency)
  • Support (in every area of growth)

And one of the primary ways they experience those things?

Through our communication.

What Are You Communicating to Them?

Preteens are constantly reading us.

  • What does your face communicate to them?
  • What do your words feel like when they hear them?
  • What does your body language signal in moments of tension?

Your nonverbal communication, tone, and presence are shaping:

  • Their confidence
  • Their understanding of relationships
  • Even how they begin to see God

That’s why people skills and communication skills matter so much.

They are not just tools.

They are formation.

Raising Future Champions

As a certified people skills coach, my vision isn’t just to help adults communicate better.

It’s to equip the champions of preteens — and to raise up preteens to become future champions themselves.

Because when we invest in them now, we’re not just improving today’s conversations…

We’re shaping generations.

Generations that:

  • Communicate with empathy
  • Build healthy, Christ-centered relationships
  • Reflect Jesus in both words and actions

The Secret Sauce Beneath the Surface

If we want strong roots, we have to be intentional about what goes into the soil.

And communication and people skills are a huge part of that.

They’re part of the “secret sauce.”

The everyday interactions. The tone of our voice. The way we listen, respond, and show up.

All of it is building a root system that is:

  • Stable
  • Protected
  • Grounded in Christ

So that when life gets hard — and it will — they don’t just survive…

They stand firm.

A Question to Consider

Are we focused more on limiting screens… or cultivating soil?

Because what we invest in now will shape what grows later.
